The budget electronics market is facing a new reality: component shortages and a memory crisis are forcing manufacturers to make compromises. A striking example is the launch of the new generation of the popular Redmi Note family — the 17 and 17 Pro models. Despite the index change, Xiaomi's new devices have become victims of economic circumstances, where maintaining an acceptable price required significantly downgrading technical specifications.
Cutting functionality to save costs
The base version of the Redmi Note 17 has lost several features that were previously considered standard for this segment. Stereo speakers have been removed from the device, and the level of water resistance has been lowered. Instead of the expected Snapdragon 6 series processor, the smartphone received a lower-tier chip from the Snapdragon 4 series. This decision directly impacts performance and system smoothness.
The position of the flagship model, the Redmi Note 17 Pro, cannot be called advantageous either. Instead of the expected power boost, engineers installed a less powerful Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chip. Furthermore, the model lost its ultra-wide camera, and the resolution of the front module was reduced. Both smartphones are equipped with outdated connectivity modules: Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 5, which is a step backward compared to previous generations.
Compensation with battery capacity
The only noticeable advantage intended to compensate for the reduction in other specifications is the record battery capacity. The base model received an 8000 mAh battery, while the flagship version got a 9000 mAh one. Xiaomi is betting on autonomy, trying to shift user attention from performance to battery life.
Price increase despite reduced specs
Paradoxically, despite all the concessions in specifications, the cost of the devices has increased. The base Redmi Note 17 starts at 1299 yuan (approximately 14,860 rubles) for the version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The flagship model formally kept its starting price at 1499 yuan (~17,150 rubles), but the base storage configuration was reduced from 256 GB to 128 GB. Prices for versions with larger storage capacities were also increased.
