The scandalous interview given by Potap and Nastia Kamenskykh to Russian journalist Ekaterina Gordeeva sparked wide resonance in Ukrainian society. Producer Mykhailo Yasinsky, having analyzed the artists' conversation, explained in a talk with Slava Demin for the Styler project (RBC-Ukraine) who, in his opinion, this performance was aimed at and what message was supposed to remain in the viewers' memory. His assessments were extremely sharp: from noting the search for a new audience outside Ukraine to directly accusing the artists of being out of touch with the context of the changes happening in the country and in the world.
Searching for a New Audience: Yasinsky's Main Thesis
According to Yasinsky, Potap and Kamenskykh are currently effectively searching for a new audience outside Ukraine. The producer claims that their Russian-language repertoire no longer enjoys the same demand among Ukrainian listeners, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to restore their previous scale of earnings. At the same time, he expresses doubt that the conversation with Gordeeva could have become a working tool for winning back the Russian audience. "People who watch Gordeeva's, Irina Shikhman's, or Yuri Dud's interviews are not the audience that previously brought Potap and Kamenskykh big money," he explained. Yasinsky also suggested that the interview resonated most of all in Ukraine, while in Russia it may have been watched out of curiosity or interest in the scandal that arose after its publication.
Strategic Misstep: What the Artists Expected and What They Got
The producer believes that strategically Potap and Kamenskykh may have expected a different reaction from the audience. In his assessment, one of the key emotional triggers was supposed to be Kamenskykh's personal story about being unable to have children. "I think they even discussed this themselves, and there may have been a strategic opinion to maintain the same emotional connection with the audience, so that people would, well, feel sorry for her and understand her as a woman. She said that she cannot have children. But people remembered something slightly different. No one talks about this," Yasinsky stated. In his opinion, it was precisely the artists' statements about the Ukrainian language and other resonant topics that attracted the attention of the Ukrainian audience to a much greater extent than the singer's personal confessions, as a result of which the outcome of the interview turned out to be the opposite of what the protagonists of the conversation probably expected.
'Out of Touch with Reality': the Producer's Sharpest Statement
A special place in Yasinsky's assessment is occupied by the artists' reaction to the public context of their own statements. The producer stated that if, after watching their own interview, Potap and Kamenskykh did not understand why their words caused outrage in Ukraine, this testifies to their deep detachment from reality. "If they watched this interview later and did not see and did not understand this, it means only one thing: that they are very, very deeply and seriously out of touch with the context, out of touch not only with what is happening in Ukraine, but with the context of the changes happening to modern people in general," he emphasized. This phrase, in essence, became the most quoted fragment of his comment and was picked up by Ukrainian media as the key characteristic of the artists' position.
The Context of the Scandalous Interview: Language, Mobilization, and Personal Life
In the conversation with Ekaterina Gordeeva, Potap and Nastia touched on a wide range of topics. Kamenskykh said that she cannot and does not yet want to have children: according to her, she underwent four IVF procedures and five inseminations, but pregnancy did not occur. The singer confessed that she used to feel societal pressure, but now does not consider motherhood a mandatory condition of a woman's happiness. Potap, in turn, stated that he would like to have more children but is not going to pressure his wife. Separately, Kamenskykh explained why she returned to the Russian language after a period of active use of Ukrainian: she linked problems with her voice and the appearance of a cyst to the switch to Ukrainian, citing a psychologist's opinion on psychosomatics. It was precisely this statement that was perceived especially sharply in the Ukrainian online space. Potap also answered a question about military duty, stating that he is subject to mobilization and is ready to go if he receives the corresponding order, but at the same time added: "Who should be Potap in this life, I chose to be Potap." He also explained why he continues to stay abroad: according to him, trips after the start of the full-scale war were related to charitable activities, and outside Ukraine he is engaged in commercial projects and earns money, in particular, to provide for his family.
