The tragic story of an elderly couple who decided to visit their ruined home one last time in a dangerous frontline zone has shocked the public. On August 29, Valentin Andreevich and his wife Lyudmila Nikolaevna set off for a village that had found itself in a so-called kill zone. Despite warnings about the danger and the complex operational situation, the couple heeded the advice of acquaintances and went to look at the home they had built with their own hands. However, their trip was cut short by a terrifying strike from an enemy drone that claimed the woman's life and severely wounded her husband.
The Fateful Day and the Drone Attack
The morning of August 29 began like any normal day, filled with hopes for an upcoming meeting with their children and Valentin Andreevich's pending medical surgery. The couple had spent years furnishing their home, pouring all their efforts into it, so the desire to see it one last time overpowered their fear. According to the surviving man, on the way to the settlement, their car was targeted in a deliberate attack by an FPV drone. The drone overtook the car right on the road under protective netting, resulting in Lyudmila Nikolaevna's instant death and leaving Valentin Andreevich with severe injuries, including a traumatic eye amputation and a traumatic brain injury.
Rescue Operation by KRAKEN Special Unit
At the moment of the tragedy, a column of fighters from the Special Unit of the Active Operations Department of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR MOU) "KRAKEN" was passing by. The military responded swiftly to the threat, opening dense fire on the drones and organizing an emergency evacuation of the wounded civilian under continuous shelling. The stabilization point medics, despite the wounded man's civilian status, immediately took him in and extracted 13 shrapnel fragments from his body. Evacuating the body of the deceased woman in the first hours was impossible due to the high intensity of repeated enemy drone attacks that turned the area into a death trap.
Contradictory Data
During the coverage of the tragedy, certain emotional and factual discrepancies arose between the relatives' assessment of the situation and the actions of the military on the frontline. In the first days after the tragedy, the deceased woman's son expressed sharp dissatisfaction that his mother's body remained for an indefinite time in a mined zone without the possibility of immediate removal. In turn, the "KRAKEN" fighters and medical personnel insisted that any attempts to evacuate the body amid continuous FPV drone attacks would have led to the deaths of more people, so saving the surviving Valentin Andreevich remained the absolute priority.
Aftermath and Memory
This tragedy has become a vivid reflection of the brutal realities in frontline regions, where an attempt to touch the past and see one's destroyed home can cost a life. The story of Valentin Andreevich and Lyudmila Nikolaevna highlights the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe and the danger of territories engulfed in active combat. Despite the pain of loss and severe wounds, the surviving man continues to cherish the memory of his beloved wife, whose life tragically ended on the threshold of their home.
