During his visit to Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with a group of US senators to discuss prospects for increasing sanctions pressure on Russia. The meeting was held in closed session, but at its conclusion, the head of state made important statements about the significance of the new bill drafted by Senator Lindsey Graham.
A signal for Europe and support for Ukraine
According to Zelenskyy, the new restrictions have strategic significance that goes far beyond simple economic strangulation. The President emphasized that it is not only about how Russia finances military actions, but also about demonstrating the political will of allies.
"Sanctions, pressure on Russia are very important. It is not only about money, about how Russia finances this war, but also about an important signal for Europe, an important signal for Ukraine, great support for our people," the Ukrainian leader stated.
For Kyiv, this bill is confirmation that Western partners do not intend to loosen their grip. Zelenskyy noted that the details were discussed very carefully: US lawmakers showed a willingness to deeply analyze mechanisms of assistance and restrictions.
Bill status and next steps
It is important to note that the process of adopting tough measures against the RF and Iran is in an active phase. On July 28, the US Senate already held a procedural vote supporting Lindsey Graham's initiative. However, before the law comes into force, it must go through one more round of procedures.
According to current plans, the final vote in the Senate should take place before the end of August. After that, the initiative will be sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. For now, the decision is not final, but political support in Congress looks stable.

During his stay in the US, Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a series of intensive negotiations, meeting with more than 60 senators. The President thanked his American colleagues for the detailed dialogue and support for the initiative.
"We are very grateful to the senators and very grateful for this discussion. The discussion was detailed regarding how to help Ukraine, and we are grateful that this bill is of very great importance," Zelenskyy concluded.
Thus, the strengthening of the sanctions regime is viewed by Kyiv not only as a tool of economic struggle but also as a powerful political signal demonstrating the unity of allied countries in the face of the aggressor.
