Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that US leader Donald Trump possesses all the necessary leverage to easily bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. The Ukrainian leader shared this during a recent interview for The Diary Of A CEO podcast, discussing current geopolitical challenges and opportunities for conflict resolution.
Washington's Leverage and Sanctions Policy
According to the head of the Ukrainian state, the US administration already has ready tools to influence Moscow. Zelenskyy noted that large-scale sanction packages, previously approved by the US Congress, are sitting on the US president's desk. At the same time, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that Washington has the opportunity to significantly increase economic pressure, but for unknown reasons has not yet fully utilized this potential.
Commenting on possible reasons for this pause, Zelenskyy suggested the existence of special relations or certain hidden economic agreements between Washington and Moscow. The podcast host also expressed the opinion that ahead of the midterm elections, the US administration might pay more attention to domestic energy prices in the US, fearing a negative reaction from voters.
The Energy Issue and American Market Independence
Responding to assumptions about the dependence of American fuel policy on Russian supplies, the Ukrainian leader gave a principled assessment of the market situation. Zelenskyy assured that internal fuel prices in the United States do not depend in any way on the volumes of hydrocarbons sold by Russia, since American companies actively export energy resources themselves.
The President of Ukraine explained that banning exports from the private economic sector makes no practical sense, as it brings stable financial inflows into the country. In his view, attempts to regulate the global market through restricting one's own exports will not bring Washington the desired political effect.
The Importance of Open Dialogue for Conflict Resolution
Regarding the prospects of diplomatic settlement and further developments, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence in the inevitability of uncovering all hidden political mechanisms. According to him, time always plays on the side of those process participants who remain open and ready to conduct an honest dialogue for the sake of achieving a fair peace.
