Day of Mourning in Zhytomyr and the Third Victim of the Night Strike
On August 20, a day of mourning was declared in Zhytomyr for those killed in the strike on the building of the Main Directorate of the National Police of the region. This was announced on a telethon by Vitalii Bunetsko, head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration (RMA). According to him, the third victim of yesterday's, August 19, shelling — a senior officer of the Directorate of Strategic Investigations — died overnight at the regional clinical hospital. Medical staff, according to the RMA, fought for her life, but the wounded woman could not be saved. Thus, the number of those killed in the overnight strike on the police headquarters has risen to three.
Chronicle of the Strikes: From the National Police Building to Logistics Warehouses
As a reminder, on August 19 Russia struck Zhytomyr with reactive drones, resulting in a hit on the building of the Main Directorate of the National Police of the region. In total, according to the head of the RMA, 53 people were injured in the shelling on August 19. The tragedy did not end with a single night: today, on August 20, around ten in the morning, the enemy carried out another shelling of Zhytomyr Oblast — this time the construction site of logistics warehouses near the city came under fire. According to Bunetsko, one civilian was injured — a builder who, as the head of the RMA noted, did not go to a shelter.
Tactical Shift: High-Speed Reactive Drones Against Civilian Infrastructure
The head of the Zhytomyr RMA stated that the occupiers have "reoriented" themselves and are deliberately striking civilian infrastructure using high-speed reactive drones. Bunetsko called on all residents to stay in shelters during air raid alerts, emphasizing that the enemy "has started hitting Zhytomyr and Zhytomyr Oblast with reactive 'Shaheds' — 'Banderolias,' which pose an extremely great threat to the civilian population and arrive very quickly." This statement effectively marks a change in the nature of the attacks: whereas previously strikes were concentrated on military and security infrastructure, civilian and economic facilities are now increasingly suffering.
Appeal to Entrepreneurs: Do Not Accumulate Products in Warehouses
Separately, Vitalii Bunetsko appealed to local entrepreneurs, asking them not to accumulate finished products in warehouses but to immediately bring them to market. According to the head of the RMA's logic, this will help minimize material damage from possible hits on warehouse and logistics facilities, which, as today's shelling shows, are increasingly coming within the strike zone. The recommendation is aimed at reducing the concentration of goods stockpiles in locations vulnerable to reactive drones.
Contradictory Data
Open sources show discrepancies in the emphasis on the number and status of the deceased. The statement of the Zhytomyr RMA refers to the "third victim" of yesterday's strike — a senior officer of the Directorate of Strategic Investigations who died overnight on August 20. At the same time, a number of media outlets had previously reported on two killed police officers, whose names were made public after the overnight strike on August 19. Formally, these data do not exclude each other: two died directly as a result of the overnight hit, while the third officer died later in the hospital. However, the chronology of death confirmations and the precise classification of the deceased (police officers vs. "victims of the strike") is presented unevenly across different materials, which requires careful verification when citing figures.
