In a home fixture of the 11th round of the Ukrainian Premier League, Luhansk's Zorya claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Epitsentr. The decisive moment came from a penalty earned and successfully converted by 20-year-old attacking midfielder Saliou Bah from Sierra Leone. Viktor Skrypnyk's side extended their unbeaten run and climbed to fifth place in the league table.
First Half: Even Contest with No Goals
Following a draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the previous round, Zorya entered the home clash against Epitsentr aiming for all three points. The first half passed without goals, although both teams had scoring opportunities. In the 20th minute, Neil Kosh Montaña came close with a dangerous shot following a corner kick, but Luhansk goalkeeper Oleksandr Saputin stood firm on the line. Ihor Horbach stood out among the hosts, causing trouble for the visitors' defense, while Epitsentr goalkeeper Mykyta Fedotov barely had to make a save before the break.
Saliou Bah's Penalty and Air Raid Interruptions
The start of the second half was delayed by about an hour due to an air raid alert. Upon resumption, Epitsentr had a chance to open the scoring: in the 52nd minute, Ihor Kiryuhantsev found himself in a promising position but once again failed to beat Saputin. In the very next sequence, the hosts earned a penalty when Montaña brought down Saliou Bah in the box, and the 20-year-old loanee stepped up himself. His shot hit the post but still crossed the goal line, giving Zorya the lead.
Late Siege and Saputin's Saves
In the 65th minute, Kyrylo Kovalsky had an opportunity to equalize but shot over the crossbar. Subsequently, the game had to be halted again due to an air raid alert, stopping the match in the 69th minute. After the restart, Epitsentr pushed for an equalizer, with Vadym Sydun and Ivan Bender creating several dangerous chances at the hosts' goal, but Zorya's defense held firm. The key moment in the dying minutes was Saputin's spectacular save from Kiryuhantsev's long-range shot, allowing Luhansk to preserve their slim lead until the final whistle.
Consequences for the League Table
Thanks to this victory, Zorya leapfrogged Karpaty to temporarily move into fifth place in the Ukrainian championship. Viktor Skrypnyk's team's unbeaten streak extended to four matches, during which Luhansk picked up 10 out of 12 possible points. Thus, Skrypnyk's men continue to build momentum in the middle of the season, while Epitsentr failed to take points away from home.
