Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a computer model of the Earth without living organisms, replicating 5 billion years of geological evolution. The development will serve as a baseline for searching for biosignatures in exoplanet atmospheres and calibrating the HWO observatory.

An arXiv study showed that 150 pinpoint edits to a digital organism's code allow a neural network to be fooled in 100% of cases: the AI classifies a dead object as living. This calls into question the reliability of AI sensors on future Mars rovers and probes.
