In New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on the evening of September 22, 2026, a meeting between Trump and Zelensky took place. US special envoys Kushner and Witkoff were present at the talks, and the main topic was energy de-escalation.

U.S. Vice President Vance called the settlement of the war in Ukraine a matter of time and announced a Trump–Zelensky meeting on September 22–23 in New York. Kyiv confirmed its readiness for de-escalation in exchange for reciprocal steps by Moscow.

In an interview with Axios, Zelensky stated that Ukraine will use September and October to step up diplomacy, and sees the UN General Assembly in New York as a possible venue for talks with the US.

GUR Head Oleg Ivashchenko stated that the Russian economy has weakened, but resources for the war will last until 2027–2028. The key problems are a shortage of personnel, the budget deficit, and the banking sector. The statement was made after three rounds of negotiations with the US in Kyiv.

Following talks with Witkoff and Kushner in Kyiv, Zelensky called the Donbas question key to the war and a condition for diplomacy, pointing to new discussions with the U.S. and Europe in the coming weeks.

US President's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are, according to a source, likely to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday, September 6. The trip's logistics are still being worked out, and Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has not directly confirmed whether it is the American delegation that is meant.
