At the end of summer 2026, Android users around the world began reporting a strange phenomenon: when checking for updates in the Google Play Store, an unfamiliar app called Android Pulse suddenly appeared in the list. The program had no familiar icon — in many cases, instead of graphics, an empty gray or white square was displayed, and on their devices, according to owners, it was somehow "just there on its own." The wave of questions about the software's origin quickly grew into a discussion of whether Google is installing third-party components without users' knowledge. What users saw and why the alarm was raised
The key trigger for the panic was that Android Pulse (system package name — com.google.android.apps.pulse) ended up on smartphones without any explicit warning or permission request. In the public interface of the Play Store, the app appeared as an ordinary item in the update list, but without full graphics — just a neutral square. It was precisely the combination of the "invisible" icon and the lack of an installation notification that led users to suspect something was wrong and to start discussing the topic en masse on social media and forums.
What Android Pulse actually is
An analysis of the APKMirror registry data shows that the first builds of Android Pulse appeared as early as spring 2026, and during this time the service managed to go through at least seven internal updates. On many smartphones, particularly in the Google Pixel series, the component had long been working in system settings under the name Pulse — with a distinctive green logo in the shape of a cardiogram. In essence, Android Pulse is a background system monitoring and diagnostics tool, belonging to the class of so-called Headless Apps: it has no user interface, it cannot be opened from the home screen, and its operation is not noticeable in everyday use.
How exactly the service works
According to Google's official description, the service is designed for "the distribution of rules for detecting anomalies in the consumption of critical system resources by the Android operating system and installed applications." It regularly downloads new algorithms from Google's servers for detecting software failures, tracks abnormal load on the processor (CPU), graphics chip (GPU), and RAM, and also looks for processes that silently drain the battery. If any application gets stuck in a loop or causes overheating, Android Pulse records telemetry so that developers can promptly fix the bug in subsequent updates. Previously, Google updated such components invisibly — through the internal mechanisms of Google Play Services; the release of a new build via the public Play Store interface made the service visible to everyone, which triggered the wave of questions.
Contradictory data
Here it is important to honestly distinguish two versions. On the one hand, users insist that the app "installed itself" without their knowledge or warning, which looks like a covert installation of third-party software. On the other hand, fact-checking against the APKMirror registries and Pixel system settings shows the opposite: the component existed on devices as a system element even before its appearance in the public store, and its "suddenness" is explained only by the fact that a new build was for the first time released through the public Play Store interface. In other words, the discrepancy is not factual but perceptual: the service was not installed "secretly" at the moment users are talking about — it was already present in the system, and its public appearance in the store merely made it noticeable. As of the time of publication of the article, no official explanation from Google regarding the reasons for moving the component to the public store has been issued, which leaves a gap in confirming the motives.
Can Android Pulse be deleted and what do the DMA rules say
It is impossible to fully delete Android Pulse from a device, as it is a deep system component of the operating system. Even in accordance with the requirements of the European Digital Markets Act (DMA), which obliges manufacturers to allow the removal of preinstalled software, critical background system components remain an exception. In the smartphone settings, a user can only force-stop or disable this service, however, doing so is not recommended: Android Pulse is designed precisely to maintain stable operation, monitor heating, and preserve battery charge. A similar situation has already occurred with other Google system services when they were moved to the public store — and each time, the public visibility of the component, rather than its actual appearance, became the source of alarm.
