At the end of July 2026, an incident occurred on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border that caused a significant stir among law enforcement agencies and the media. At the Kapčiamiestis border guard post of the Varėna Border Guard Unit of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT), a conflict arose between service personnel and a group of illegal migrants. According to sources, during the clash, one of the border guards sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized.
Discovery of the tunnel and ambush
According to reports from Lithuanian media outlets Delfi, LRT, and Lrytas, the incident began with the discovery of an illegal tunnel dug under the state border. Border guards, noticing signs of the tunnel, organized an ambush in the Kapčiamiestis area. Four service officers waited for the appearance of migrants, who were suspected of planning to use the tunnel to cross the border illegally.
When the migrants appeared, the border guards attempted to detain them and put handcuffs on them. However, a group of approximately 20 people offered active resistance. According to eyewitnesses and sources in law enforcement, the attackers not only tried to free the detainees but also attacked the border guards themselves, attempting to force one of them towards the territory of Belarus.
Injuries to the border guard and flight of migrants
During the scuffle, one of the officers sustained minor injuries. Vitalijus Jagminas, Chairman of the Union of Pre-trial Investigation Institutions of the Vilnius County, confirmed that the injured person is on sick leave. Despite attempts to detain them, the migrants, including those who were already handcuffed, managed to escape back to the territory of Belarus.
This incident became one of the most serious in recent times on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, where cases of illegal crossing and attempts to create underground passages had already been recorded.

The official position of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT) raises questions. While the agency confirmed the fact of the tunnel's discovery, the head of the service, Rūstamas Liubavas, previously denied information about a physical attack on employees. According to him, the service could not establish the fact of an attack, and the details of the incident remain in question.
At the same time, sources in the media and unions claim that it was the leadership of the service that instructed the border guards not to disclose the details of the incident. The VSAT press service refused to comment on the circumstances of the incident, citing an ongoing pre-trial investigation.
Expansion of the investigation and new security measures
Last week, the Lithuanian Prosecutor's Office expanded and reclassified the investigation, which began on July 27 regarding the illegal crossing of the border. Now, the investigation will also examine the actions of the responsible border service employees who were responsible for monitoring, control, and guarding the border, in order to provide an objective assessment of the established facts.
Parallel to this, Lithuania plans to strengthen engineering security measures on the border with Belarus and the Kaliningrad Region of Russia. The Cabinet of Ministers of the country has changed its approach to border protection and plans to create new security zones, including the formation of swampy areas that will make crossing the border more difficult.

The strengthening of border measures in the region is taking place against the backdrop of growing threats from Russia. According to the Lithuanian Minister of Defense, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is already assessing scenarios for possible attacks on the Baltic states, although a final decision on such an operation has not yet been made. Similar steps to strengthen borders are being taken by other countries in the region, including Ukraine, which is increasing defensive lines along the entire length of its northern border with Belarus.
