The Ukrainian agricultural sector is under attack not only due to logistical challenges but also due to the direct threat to the safety of maritime transport. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is urgently developing a comprehensive set of measures to support the industry. This initiative is a reaction to the escalating situation in the Black Sea, where Russian attacks on port infrastructure and commercial grain ships are creating critical risks for exports.
Prime Minister Serhiy Kortsyk confirmed that the current situation requires immediate action. According to him, threats at sea are jeopardizing not only farmers' incomes but the country's economy as a whole. In this regard, the head of the government held an emergency meeting with representatives of the agricultural business and relevant associations. The goal of the meeting was to determine the priority steps to stabilize the situation.
Financial Support and New Sales Channels
The key direction of the government's work has been the diversification of logistics. Officials are working on restoring and opening new channels for supplying Ukrainian products to world markets. However, as Kortsyk noted, logistics is only one part of the solution. In parallel, a large-scale package of financial support for producers is being prepared.
Special attention is being paid to interaction with the banking sector. The authorities plan to develop new financing mechanisms that will allow farmers to continue their work even in conditions of instability. In addition, the government intends to strengthen diplomatic work with partner countries, which remain the main buyers of Ukrainian grain.
Consequences of Attacks on the Merchant Fleet
The need for such measures is dictated by real incidents. Recently, Russia has regularly attacked ships in the Black Sea. The consequences of the strikes range from damage to equipment to human casualties. One of the recent examples was an attack on a civilian vessel under the Liberian flag, which had already been targeted twice.
Due to systematic attacks on ports and foreign commercial vessels, Ukrainian maritime exports have effectively come to a halt. This has created a global threat to food security, making the government's actions to save the industry not just an economic, but a humanitarian necessity.
Long-term Strategy
As a result of the meeting, the participants agreed on a plan of priority activities and distributed responsibility for each direction. An agreement was reached to hold such meetings regularly throughout the emergency period in order to respond promptly to changes on the front and in the economy.
