On 24 August 2026, Ukraine's Independence Day, Chernihiv came under a strike that partially destroyed a multi-storey residential building. As reported by RBC-Ukraine citing its own correspondent, photos and videos show damage to the facade and window openings, the collapse of part of the structure, and piles of bricks and rubble. Preliminary data indicates that a drone hit the building; the exact nature of the weapon, according to security services, will be established after the relevant analyses.

Preliminary information indicates that at least 14 people were injured in the attack, including children aged 12 and 17. Later, Deputy City Head Viktor Gerashchenko reported that 17 people were injured during the shelling of Chernihiv. According to the head of the regional police, Vladimir Tymoshko, around 12:00 the city was attacked by 'Shahed' drones, presumably jet-powered. The building hit by the drone has been disconnected from electricity, water, and gas. Specialists will assess the scale of the damage and begin restoration; residents of the damaged apartments, authorities promise, will receive financial assistance. Against the backdrop of the strikes on Chernihiv, the situation in other regions is also reported: from the morning, Odesa and the region came under fire, where, according to reports, two 'Epitsentr' hypermarkets were destroyed and fires broke out, while in Konotop a strike destroyed the fleet of urban and intercity buses, putting the city at risk of a shortage of public transport; Konotop is also without gas.
