The operation of the Chernihivska metro station in Kyiv has been suspended for an indefinite period. This was announced on television by Andriy Tkachov, acting head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, while reporting on the consequences of the Russian attack, which caused significant damage to the station's infrastructure. According to him, exact timelines for the resumption of work cannot yet be provided as specialists continue to assess the scale of the damage.

Scale of Damage and Assessment Process

According to the KCMA, the most serious damage was inflicted on the railway tracks at the station. Tkachov emphasized that the damage is “very significant,” which makes the rapid restoration of traffic impossible. Specialized experts are currently working at the site to assess the condition of the damaged infrastructure and determine the scope of necessary repair work. Only after this assessment is completed will a restoration plan be formed, and consequently, a forecast for the resumption of the station's operation will become possible.

Repair Resources Secured

Despite the uncertainty regarding timelines, the KCMA assured that the necessary equipment and spare parts for repair work are already at the site. Tkachov noted that this will allow the work to be carried out “as quickly as possible” after specialists complete the damage assessment and determine the exact scope of repairs. Thus, the key limiting factor remains not a shortage of resources, but the need for a thorough inspection of the infrastructure before restoration work begins.

Attack Context and Consequences for the City

The damage to Chernihivska station resulted from a massive attack by Russian forces that began on the evening of October 18 and continued through the night and morning of October 19. Kyiv was subjected to strikes by ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. As a result of the shelling, one person was killed and eight others were injured. In addition to the metro station, the attack damaged railway tracks and the cable network. Due to infrastructure damage on the red metro line, the train schedule has been temporarily altered, creating additional inconvenience for passengers.

Impact on Kyiv's Transportation System

The indefinite closure of Chernihivska station brings significant changes to the operation of the capital's metro system. Passengers for whom this station is a key transfer point or terminal are forced to look for alternative routes. The temporary schedule change on the red line has already led to increased travel time and a redistribution of passenger traffic. When exactly the station will be reopened to passengers will only be known after the damage assessment is completed and repair work begins.
