On August 20, massive emergency power outages were recorded in two regions of Ukraine — Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts. According to data cited by RBC-Ukraine from official publications of “Chernihivoblenergo”, “Sumyoblenergo”, and the Sumy City Council’s JSC “Horvodokanal”, the consequences of the accident affected both household consumers and municipal infrastructure facilities. In the Chernihiv region, about 200,000 subscribers were left without electricity, while in Sumy, the power outage at the water utility caused temporary water supply disruptions. Emergency crews in both regions are already working to restore normal power supply.
Scale of outages in the Chernihiv region
In the Chernihiv region, power supply ceased in four districts at once — Koriukivka, Novhorod-Siverskyi, Nizhyn, and Chernihiv. According to energy experts, about 200,000 subscribers were left without electricity as a result of the accident. This is one of the largest incidents in terms of coverage in the region in recent times: the outage affected a significant part of residential buildings and socially significant facilities. Representatives of “Chernihivoblenergo” confirmed that emergency crews have been sent to the sites of the malfunctions and are carrying out work to restore electricity distribution.
Sumy: without light and water
In the Sumy region, a large-scale emergency power outage was also recorded, and energy experts from “Sumyoblenergo” are working to restore power supply. The situation in the city was made particularly acute by water supply problems: due to power outages on August 20 at 14:07, the facilities of JSC “Horvodokanal” were disconnected. The enterprise asked residents to understand the temporary inconveniences and promised to return water supply to normal mode after the situation stabilizes. The current status of the water utility is reported separately.
Causes and work of emergency crews
According to energy experts, the cause of the outages in the Chernihiv region was emergency malfunctions in the networks of NEK “Ukrenergo”. For the Sumy region, the cause is described more generally in the provided materials — as a large-scale accident in the networks, without detailing the specific section. In both regions, emergency crews have already begun restoration work, and normalization of the power supply regime is expected as damages are eliminated. Consumers are advised to monitor the official channels of operators to receive up-to-date data on restoration deadlines.
Contradictory data
There is a difference in the level of detail regarding the causes of the incident in the provided materials. For the Chernihiv region, a specific cause was officially named — emergency malfunctions in the networks of NEK “Ukrenergo”, whereas for the Sumy region, the same sources only state a “large-scale emergency outage” without disclosing the technical nature of the damage. Additionally, it is mentioned in the context that the Government of Ukraine has canceled power restriction schedules for industrial and commercial consumers that provide at least 80% of their energy consumption through imports or own generation. Formally, this decision does not cancel emergency outages, however, for some readers, it may create confusion between scheduled schedules and unscheduled accidents, so both versions are presented openly.
How to get information and contact dispatch centers
Residents of the Sumy region can find out about the reasons for the outage at a specific address through the E-Svitlo personal cabinet, in the “Outages” section on the website of JSC “Sumyoblenergo”, as well as by calling the call center: 0 800 300 247 and 0542 659 659. Regarding water supply in Sumy, the dispatch center of JSC “Horvodokanal” is available at: 050 407-81-10 and 067 548-21-12. Energy experts in both regions urge consumers to rely on official publications and not to spread unconfirmed information about the terms of power supply restoration.
