On October 16, power engineers in several regions of Ukraine were forced to introduce emergency electricity outages due to the difficult situation in the power system caused by Russian shelling of infrastructure facilities. This was reported by the state-owned enterprise Ukrenergo on its Telegram channel, specifying that in the regions where emergency restrictions have been applied, previously published schedules of planned blackouts are currently not in effect.
Scale of outages by region
According to regional distribution system operators, emergency outages affected, in particular, parts of the Konotop and Romny districts of the Sumy region, as well as the entire territory of the Zhytomyr region. Poltavoblenergo reported that emergency power supply restrictions have also been in effect in the region since 19:23. Zhytomyroblenergo urged local residents to unplug equipment sensitive to voltage surges to prevent damage when power restoration begins.
Ukrenergo's position and recommendations for the population
Ukrenergo emphasized that power engineers are working to restore electricity supply as soon as possible in all affected regions. Emergency outages will be canceled after the situation in the power system stabilizes. The operator also reminded that the situation may change throughout the day and urged citizens to monitor up-to-date reports on the pages of their regionaloblenergo. Separately, the company recommended consuming electricity sparingly in places where power supply has been maintained.
Restoration of power supply
Sumyoblenergo noted that specialists are already carrying out work to restore power supply in the Konotop and Romny districts, but the timing of full restoration depends primarily on the local security situation. According to Korrespondent, during the day on October 16, power engineers managed to restore electricity to more than one million consumers. Repair work continues in all regions where the security situation allows.
Context: attacks since early morning
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that on October 16, Russian attacks on energy facilities in a number of regions continued from early morning. According to Korrespondent, large-scale outages also covered the Rivne region due to a drone attack on the main power grid, and in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, emergency outages were introduced during the day. Thus, strikes on energy infrastructure affected at least six regions of the country, confirming the systemic nature of attacks on Ukraine's energy system.
