Ukraine has come close to resolving the issue of evacuating civilians from the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region, where an extremely severe humanitarian crisis has unfolded. This was stated by Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, emphasizing that thousands of people remaining in the settlement are suffering from an acute shortage of food, medicines, and a direct threat to their lives.
Humanitarian crisis and life-threatening conditions under occupation
According to the ombudsman, the situation in Oleshky has effectively reached the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, as local residents are not just facing a deficit of necessities but are literally fighting for survival. Due to the blockade and lack of normal conditions, people are facing starvation. It was previously reported that amidst severe food shortages, local residents have been forced to eat grass and weeds, while Russian military personnel occupy abandoned or empty civilian homes and seize their remaining food supplies.
Negotiations and UAV logistics
The Ukrainian side is engaged in continuous and difficult negotiations with the Russian Federation regarding the organization of safe corridors to evacuate thousands of civilians, including children, and the process is currently in its final stage. Until the official evacuation is completed, Ukrainian servicemen are trying to provide feasible assistance to the residents remaining in the town. Unmanned aerial vehicles are deployed for this purpose to deliver drinking water, medicines, and food supplies.
Obstacles posed by occupation forces
However, delivering humanitarian cargo using UAVs involves serious risks. As Dmytro Lubinets stated, Russian forces purposefully attempt to shoot down Ukrainian drones delivering aid. In addition, there have been cases of the detention of civilians who try to accept humanitarian aid provided by the Ukrainian military.
Significance of the evacuation and next steps
The implementation of agreements on removing the civilian population from Oleshky will be a critically important step to save thousands of human lives. The situation in the region requires immediate humanitarian intervention, as the protracted crisis and the actions of the occupation administration threaten the physical survival of the remaining Ukrainian citizens. The Ukrainian authorities continue to do everything possible to swiftly conclude the negotiation process and open safe evacuation routes.
