A tense dialogue is unfolding in Ukrainian politics regarding the future of Mykhailo Fedorov. Following his sharp resignation from the post of Minister of Defense, the former head of the department found himself at the center of personnel changes that could radically alter the structure of the country's military management.
The President's offer and Fedorov's silence
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that negotiations with Mykhailo Fedorov are ongoing. The head of state offered the former minister a new position — Vice Prime Minister for Military Innovations. According to Zelenskyy, this position is intended to ensure coordination between the Ministry of Defense and the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
However, the President's advisor, Dmytro Litvin, refused to disclose the details of the offer. "The dialogue between the President and Mykhailo is still ongoing, so it is inappropriate to disclose its content," he told journalists. Neither the powers nor the spheres of responsibility of the new post have been defined yet.
Fedorov's conditions: Ministry of Defense only
Sources in the former minister's circle report that Fedorov is ready to return to public service only as the head of the Ministry of Defense. He rejects any other options, including the post of Vice Prime Minister. This creates a deadlock in negotiations and intensifies tensions between the political and military blocks.
Reasons for resignation and conflict with the army
A week earlier, Zelenskyy fired Fedorov, citing "ineffective interaction" between the Ministry of Defense and the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The President emphasized that without his personal intervention, cooperation between the departments was impossible. In turn, Fedorov claimed that he had proposed replacing the military leadership, but his initiative did not receive support. After that, according to him, the General Staff began blocking reforms that he planned to implement.
Who is now in charge?
Yevhen Khmara — former acting head of the SBU — has been appointed Acting Minister of Defense. His appointment became part of a large-scale personnel purge aimed at restoring control over the military sector. However, the question of who will occupy key posts in the future remains open.
The situation surrounding Fedorov demonstrates a deep rift in Ukraine's defense management system. If the dialogue does not lead to a compromise, the country may face even greater instability at a critically important moment of the war.
