During scheduled combat live-fire training exercises by NATO forces at the Adazi military range in Latvia, a serious incident involving the unintentional use of weapons within the contingent occurred. As a result of so-called friendly fire, Italian army servicemen operating in the maneuver zone were injured.
Details of the Incident at the Adazi Range
According to preliminary official data, the incident took place during the execution of tactical tasks with live ammunition. A Dardo infantry fighting vehicle accidentally opened machine-gun fire on a similar armored vehicle moving directly ahead of it. Reports indicate that the rear hatch of the leading vehicle was open, presumably because the personnel were preparing to dismount.
As a result of the bullet impacts, four Italian soldiers inside the second vehicle were injured. Immediately after the emergency, first aid was promptly administered to the victims at the scene, after which they were urgently evacuated to medical facilities in Riga for specialized treatment.
Condition of the Victims and Medical Care
At present, the lives of all four wounded Italian servicemen are not in danger. Three of them sustained moderate injuries, while the fourth soldier is in a more severe but stable condition under medical observation.
The contingent command confirmed that all injured personnel have already managed to contact their families and loved ones to personally report the incident and reassure them that there is no critical threat to their health.
