Ukrainian company GrimTech presented the Grim LA-80 fixed-wing strike drone at the MSPO 2026 international defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland. The aircraft is in the final stage of development. In terms of design, it is positioned as a counterpart to Russian drones of the 'Molniya' type — a light fixed-wing UAV that has become one of the mass-produced means of destruction in modern conflicts. The developers' main focus is on low unit cost and the ability to rapidly scale serial production.
Specifications and Tactical Niche
According to the company, the Grim LA-80 is designed to carry up to 5 kg of payload over a distance of up to 80 km. The drone is primarily intended to strike stationary targets in the enemy's rear: fortifications, dugouts, caponiers, and vehicles that remain in one place for extended periods. It is precisely the combination of fixed-wing aerodynamics, relatively long range, and low cost that makes the aircraft a tool for systematic strikes on entrenched objects, rather than for a one-off operation.
Communication and Control: A Bet on the Satellite Channel
For drone control, the developers are considering several options: a basic radio channel, digital video link, and Starlink satellite communication. The satellite option is named the priority, as it is supposed to provide more stable control over long distances. The company 'Militarnomu' explained that flight range depends on the payload mass: with a load of about 2 kg, the aircraft is theoretically capable of covering up to 100 km, but the main limitation remains the stability of the communication link. Accordingly, the focus is placed on the payload and the nature of use, rather than on maximum range.
Production and Warhead
The serial body of the Grim LA-80 is planned to be manufactured using vacuum forming, which should make it lighter, stronger, and suitable for rapid production. The wings are made of foam, and the structure also uses aluminum tubes and plywood. Importantly, the company itself does not produce warheads for the drone — they will be installed directly by the military. The cargo bay is adapted for munitions of various types and fairly large diameter, and its design allows adjusting the position of the munition for proper balancing of the aircraft.
Development Status and Field Testing
The Grim LA-80 is in the final stage of development and has not yet been used in combat conditions. 'We are refining and polishing the product so that it is high quality, and we are trying to manufacture a test batch of samples for handover to the front for testing, for field trials,' GrimTech said. Thus, the company is preparing to produce a test batch of drones to be handed over to the military for field trials.
Exhibition Context: 'Korall' on a Tatra Chassis
At the same MSPO 2026 exhibition, 'Ukroboronprom' for the first time demonstrated a launcher for the 'Korall' surface-to-air missile, mounted on the chassis of a Czech Tatra truck. The missile is being considered as a means of intercepting aerial and ballistic targets, which, together with the demonstration of strike drones, reflects the wide range of defense developments presented by Ukrainian enterprises in Kielce.
