Ukraine is experiencing a wave of intense heat. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, air temperatures in several regions are reaching critical levels. However, meteorologists warn that by the end of the week, the synoptic situation will change, and the scorching heat will be replaced by active thunderstorms.

Temperature maximums and "heat islands"

According to Natalia Ptukha, Head of the Media Relations Department at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, the current heat is caused by the influx of a scorching air mass from Western Europe combined with an anticyclone. This means that precipitation is practically ruled out in the coming days, and the weather will remain dry and hot.

From August 4 to 6 (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), weather stations located in open areas will record temperatures ranging from +35°C to +38°C. At night, the air will cool down only to +18...+25°C.

The situation in major cities deserves special attention. Due to the "heat island" effect, where asphalt, concrete, and buildings accumulate solar energy, temperature readings in city centers may be significantly higher than those recorded at official weather stations.

Weather change: from heat to thunderstorms

As early as August 7 (Friday), meteorologists forecast the beginning of a change in processes. This will primarily affect the western regions, where isolated thunderstorms are possible. Although temperatures will remain high during these days, a gradual decrease to +26...+31°C will begin in the western regions — values more typical for the summer season.

By August 8, the atmospheric front will move eastward. Short-term rains and thunderstorms are expected across almost the entire territory of Ukraine, with the exception of the southeast. In the southeast, strong heat (+35...+38°C) will persist for one more day. Nighttime temperatures in most regions will remain within +20...+25°C, but in the west, the air will cool down more significantly — to +15...+20°C.

Warning about storm phenomena

Experts warn that after a period of intense heat, a lot of energy accumulates in the atmosphere. This creates conditions for intense thunderstorm processes. From August 7 to 8, residents of the country are advised to closely monitor warnings from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center and regional divisions.

Possible phenomena that may accompany the arrival of the atmospheric front:

  • Powerful thunderstorms;
  • Hail;
  • Gusts of wind.

By August 9 (Sunday), a noticeable drop in temperature is expected across the entire territory of Ukraine. The heat will remain, but it will no longer be exhausting or threatening to infrastructure and human activity.
