The large mirrored star on Verka Serduchka’s head is recognized even by those who have never followed Andriy Danyлко’s work. This headdress has long ceased to be just a stage prop and has turned into a stable cultural code: it works as a visual logo of a character that needs no explanation. At the same time, as the artist and his colleagues reveal, the star appeared not for the sake of shock value, but as a pragmatic stage tool with a very specific task — to make a statement on the international arena. Read more about the history of this attribute in the article by Styler (a RBC-Ukraine project).
Why a Star: The Conception Before Eurovision 2007
According to Danyлко, the idea to make a star a headpiece arose on the eve of participating in the Eurovision 2007 Song Contest. Outside of Ukraine, Verka Serduchka’s character was not yet widely known, and the artist needed to quickly and vividly emphasize the performer's status. “You are a local artist,” is how Danyлко explained the idea: at the international contest, Verka Serduchka was not yet known, so she had to declare her status herself, and the star on her head became part of this stage gesture.
Not Soviet Symbolism: Danyлко’s Own Associations
Some critics saw a reference to Soviet symbols in the star headpiece, but the artist himself explained in an interview with Voice of America in 2023 that for him this symbol was primarily associated with celestial bodies. Danyлко recalled the childhood tradition of making a wish when seeing a falling star, and it was this association that was close to him. Thus, in his concept, the star carried a romantic rather than ideological meaning.
Who Actually Created the Shape
Although the concept itself belonged to Andriy Danyлко, not only his team worked on the visual embodiment. This was revealed in August 2026 by Ukrainian director and music video maker Semen Horov in an interview with BLIK. According to him, the author of the famous star was costume designer Angela Lysytsia, who collaborated with Horov on films and music videos and was responsible for Serduchka's luxurious stage outfits. Horov called Lysytsia the author of the stage luxury that became the character's trademark: the concept belonged to Danyлко, but the shape remembered by millions of viewers was developed by the artist.
Eight Kilograms on the Head
The spectacular look of the attribute comes with a significant physical load. In a conversation with the Ukrainian publication Clutch in 2018, Danyлко shared that the star Verka Serduchka wore at Eurovision weighed about eight kilograms. Due to the mirrored elements, it was difficult to keep it on the head, and the constant need to balance caused neck pain. The artist was not going to abandon this element of his image: he compared the star to Charlie Chaplin’s bowler hat, which became an integral part of the comedian’s persona — essentially, the star turned into the 'head' of his character.
The Star as the Finale of the Concert
Over time, the headdress acquired another stage significance. Danyлко stated that at some concerts Verka Serduchka removes the star, and the audience makes wishes. According to the artist, this started as an improvisation that later turned into one of the possible endings of the performance. Thus, an ordinary stage prop transformed into a recognizable symbol with its own history and a separate role in the artist’s communication with the public.
