On August 18, 2026, during an air campaign against Ukraine, an unprecedented incident occurred: Russian jet unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) reached the western regions of the country for the first time. According to monitoring groups and official statements from the Ukrainian Air Force, the drones covered a distance of approximately 900 kilometers from the launch site, significantly exceeding the operational characteristics of such systems previously cited by experts.
Attack route: from Vinnytsia to Rivne region
According to the chronology of events published at 17:55, the Ukrainian Air Force recorded the penetration of a jet drone through the Vinnytsia region towards Khmelnytskyi (the area of Nova Ushytsia and Dunayivtsi). Within half an hour, the threat moved north: the UAV flew through the Ternopil region, reaching Volyn and the city of Dubno. Later, the Governor of the Rivne region, Alexander Koval, confirmed that an aerial target was shot down in the south of the region, which experts identified as a jet drone of the "Shahed" type or its latest modification.
Technological evolution: "Geran-4" and "Geran-5"
Experts previously estimated the operational range of jet drones to be within 500 kilometers, which made the western regions of Ukraine a relatively safe zone. However, as reported by the British publication The Telegraph, Russia is deliberately developing and launching new models — "Geran-4" and "Geran-5" — specifically for strikes on the west of the country. The key factor in increasing the range was the implementation of mesh-network control. This technology allows for an increased radius of action, but requires the presence of signal repeaters every 100 kilometers, indicating complex logistical preparation for attacks.
Contradictory data
There are discrepancies in open sources regarding the exact flight range and the type of drones used. On the one hand, the Ukrainian Air Force and єРадар confirm the fact of a 900 km flight, which is an absolute record for jet UAVs. On the other hand, some analysts point out that the standard range of such devices is limited to 500 km, and a 900 km flight is possible only under ideal conditions and the use of a chain of repeaters. It is also not excluded that the term "jet drone" in some reports could refer to other types of UAVs capable of longer distances but with different aerodynamics. Nevertheless, the fact of reaching the western regions remains confirmed.
Strikes on Kyiv and infrastructure expansion
Parallel to the attack on the west, explosions were heard in Kyiv on the evening of August 18 against the backdrop of a declared air raid. In the Kyiv region, particularly in Brovary, civilian objects were damaged, and fires were recorded at three locations. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that Russia is actively expanding the network of sites for launching long-range strike drones, allowing it to shift the centers of gravity of strikes to new territories. Probably, one of the strategic goals of the enemy is precisely the demonstration of the ability to strike western Ukraine, which puts critical infrastructure and rear regions at risk.
