The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan officially confirmed that a sharp "power surge" occurred in the power system, caused by a critical change in electricity transfer from the Unified Power System of Central Asia (UPSCA). In response, emergency protection automation, which is designed to protect the network from overloads under normal conditions, was triggered, but in this case, it led to mass outages.

Consumers in Almaty and ten districts of the Almaty region were left without electricity, including Zhambyl, Balkhash, Yesik, Karasai, Shelek, Raymbek, Uygur, Ili, Kegen, and Talgar. In Almaty itself, the situation was exacerbated by the shutdown of the metro, causing a transport collapse. City residents massively complained about non-functioning traffic lights, mobile communication outages, and water supply problems, as pumping stations ceased to function.

Neighbors' Reaction: Uzbekistan and Tajikistan

The domino effect instantly spread to neighboring states. In Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Energy reported failures in several regions, directly citing the cause as an accident in the power system of a neighboring country. The operator "National Power Grids of Uzbekistan" confirmed the activation of multi-stage emergency protection automation and began the process of phased power restoration.

In Tajikistan, outages were recorded in Dushanbe, Kulob, Khujand, Vahdat, Nurek, Hisar, and other regions. The country's authorities quickly reacted to rumors on social media: the Ministry of Energy of Tajikistan officially refuted the version that the cause was an accident at the Nurek HPP. At the moment, the official cause of the failure in the republic is under investigation.

Kyrgyzstan: The Epicenter of the Problem?

In Kyrgyzstan, power outages were recorded by residents of Bishkek and the Issyk-Kul region. At the time of publication of official reports, the country's authorities did not provide a detailed report on the emergency shutdown, but this region became the focus of independent investigations.

The official position of the Ministries of Energy of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan boils down to technical terms: "power surge," "change in transfer," and "accident at a neighbor." At the same time, a source from Orda.kz, citing data from energy workers, names a specific trigger for the event — the emergency shutdown of two hydrogenerators at the Toktogul HPP in Kyrgyzstan.

According to this version, the failure of the generators caused a critical overload of the "North — East — South" transit line in the power system of Kazakhstan. This led to the fact that the Southern Zone of the EES of Kazakhstan was forced to disconnect from the Unified Power System of Central Asia to prevent a cascading destruction of the entire network. While the official departments of Kyrgyzstan have not yet confirmed this version, it remains the most likely from a technical point of view.
