Strategic Pivot: Global Debut in Chengdu

Amidst fierce competition in the 2026 automotive market, Mercedes-Benz is betting on localization and technological superiority. The company has officially announced the upcoming debut of a new version of its flagship crossover — the GLE with an extended wheelbase (GLE L). The model's premiere will take place at the Chengdu Auto Show, scheduled from August 21 to 30, 2026. This move underscores the strategic importance of the Chinese market for the German brand, which is adapting its products to local preferences, focusing on maximum comfort and cutting-edge digital technologies.

The new GLE L is positioned as a large luxury SUV developed specifically for Chinese buyers. The vehicle features an updated signature design that harmoniously combines classic brand elements with modern aerodynamic solutions. The dimensions of the new model are impressive: length is 5051 mm, width — 2018 mm, height — 1784 mm. Special attention has been paid to interior space, ensured by an increased wheelbase of 3115 mm. This allows rear-row passengers to enjoy room comparable to vehicles of a higher class.

Technological Breakthrough: Integration of Momenta R7 AI

The main innovation of the new GLE L is not just the increase in dimensions, but the implementation of advanced intelligent systems. The vehicle is equipped with an intelligent instrument panel with artificial intelligence functions, capable of adapting to driving style and assisting the driver in both dense urban traffic and on country roads. Mercedes-Benz has integrated the Momenta R7 system into its platform — an advanced AI autonomous driving model from the Chinese company Momenta, presented in the spring of 2026.

The Momenta R7 system uses reinforcement learning and a special Momenta X7 chip, allowing the vehicle to predict road situations and make decisions at the level of Tesla FSD. Mercedes-Benz calls this one of the first such implementations for luxury vehicles with gasoline engines. The technology will expand intelligent driving capabilities through subsequent software updates (OTA), ensuring the constant relevance of autopilot functionality and safety systems.

Engine Range and Production

Two versions of the new crossover have been prepared for the Chinese market: GLE 350 L and GLE 450 L. The base version, GLE 350 L, will receive the proven 2.0-liter turbocharged M254 engine with 190 kW (258 hp), which ensures a balance between dynamics and efficiency. The top version, GLE 450 L, is equipped with a more powerful 3.0-liter M256 engine producing 280 kW (381 hp), guaranteeing high performance and the status of the vehicle.

Production of the extended GLE L version is handled by the joint venture Beijing Benz. This allows the brand not only to optimize logistics and reduce costs but also to react faster to changes in demand in the region. Localization of production also contributes to the deeper integration of Chinese technological solutions, such as the Momenta system, into the vehicle's architecture.
