The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has urgently reached out to the United States government, SpaceX management, and key NATO partners due to unexpected and large-scale restrictions on satellite communications. According to informed sources, the agency is promptly gathering detailed data from all military units facing disruptions while simultaneously checking and activating available backup communication channels to stabilize the situation on the frontline.

The Essence of the Issue and SpaceX Actions

According to available data, on the night of October 14, 2026, SpaceX unilaterally and without prior official notification to the Ukrainian Defense Forces imposed strict restrictions on the operation of Starshield terminals using a special military package. The established speed limit is 160 km/h: once this threshold is exceeded, the terminal completely loses connection with the satellite constellation. In practice, troops report fluctuating disconnection metrics — on certain types of equipment and in various units, connection begins to drop at speeds ranging from approximately 72 to 161 km/h.

Impact on Military Operations and Logistics

These restrictions have critically complicated combat missions, particularly the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles. Missions involving interceptor drones and middle-strike attack vehicles, which require gaining high speed at launch, are now at risk of being disrupted. Furthermore, front-line logistics, aerial reconnaissance capabilities, and stable signal re-transmission have been severely impaired. Experts and military personnel note that the suddenness of this decision caught Ukrainian units by surprise.

Contradictory Data

While official sources report systematic work with partners and the collection of analytics across all fronts, the expert community and representatives of certain military branches cite different data regarding the critical disconnection threshold. Presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov stated that disruptions began at speeds exceeding 160 km/h, whereas representatives of the 7th Air Assault Corps in the Huliaypole direction recorded connection drops lasting up to 20 seconds at much lower speeds of 110-120 km/h. Due to these technological discrepancies, some combat sorties had to be completely canceled.
