The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced a major expansion of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. According to plans approved by the agency in August 2026, contracts for three new missions will be awarded by the end of the current year. This initiative marks a transition from isolated experiments to the creation of a regular logistical infrastructure on the Moon, where private space operators play a key role.
Private logistics strategy and new contracts
As part of the updated strategy, NASA pays private companies to deliver scientific equipment and technology to the surface of Earth's satellite. As revealed by the heads of leading market players — Firefly Aerospace and Intuitive Machines — at recent financial conferences, the structure of future contracts has already been defined. Two of the three orders will be related to landers designed to deliver cargo to specific points on the lunar surface. The third order has a fundamentally different focus: it provides for the imaging and detailed mapping of lunar orbit, which will be critical for the navigation of future missions.
Technological race: Firefly Aerospace and Intuitive Machines
Although NASA has not yet disclosed official details of the future order for the orbital vehicle, the private sector has already begun active preparations. Firefly Aerospace announced the development of a commercial lunar imaging service called 'Ocula'. The cameras of this system are planned to be installed on mobile 'Aethra' platforms in combination with 'Blue Ghost' landers. In parallel, Intuitive Machines has significantly expanded its production capacity in Houston, while Firefly has increased the area of its clean rooms by more than four times. These measures are aimed at ensuring the standardization and acceleration of lunar platform production.
Increased payload capacity and scaling
A key trend in 2026 has been the drive to increase payload mass. Within the framework of new technical capabilities, private companies are developing vehicles capable of delivering significantly heavier cargo than was possible at the beginning of the decade. In particular, Intuitive Machines' Nova-D vehicle can now deliver about 500 kilograms of cargo, and its three-engine version, currently under development, is designed to carry up to one ton. Firefly is also working on a scalable version of Blue Ghost with a payload capacity of several tons, paving the way for the delivery of large-scale equipment for future bases.
Contradictory data
In the context of the CLPS program, there are discrepancies in the assessment of timelines and mission status. On the one hand, NASA and private partners state plans to award three new contracts by the end of 2026 and prepare for monthly missions. On the other hand, the industry retains risks of delays related to the need to redesign vehicles and undergo certification. For example, the Japanese company Ispace was previously forced to revise the design of its vehicle, which led to a shift in launch dates. Experts note that, despite optimistic statements about the 'regularity' of flights, the technical readiness of all four planned vehicles (including new contracts) for simultaneous launch raises questions among analysts.
