Ukrainian defense company Phantom Defence, at the large-scale IT Arena tech conference in Lviv, has introduced an innovative development for the first time—a specialized FPV drone interceptor named "Mangal." This system is designed to provide effective protection for frontline positions, critical infrastructure, and military equipment against mass enemy drone attacks.
Design Features and Operational Principle
The new system is engineered as a kinetic interception tool, serving as an alternative to traditional electronic warfare systems. The launcher fires a special net equipped with weights. Directly upon firing, the net deploys in the air, physically entangling the rotors and body of the kamikaze drone, leading to its inevitable crash. The modular design holds six simultaneous charges, and two integrated cameras are included for comprehensive situational awareness.
Automation and Combat Integration
The developers have placed special emphasis on software: the complex features an automatic target detection function. This significantly reduces the cognitive load on the operator, allowing for quicker threat identification and activation of the defense mechanism. Thanks to its universal mounting, the system can be deployed either stationary at checkpoints, trenches, and infrastructure sites, or integrated onto various types of military vehicles.
Serial Production Prospects and Broader Context
According to official statements from Phantom Defence representatives, the first serial production models are expected to hit the market in the coming months. Concurrently, Ukraine's defense industry is actively developing other UAV countermeasures. In August, the Armed Forces of Ukraine received high-speed jet interceptors Alexa Spatium, and in late September, state leadership confirmed successful field tests and upcoming scaling of similar innovative systems.
