On the night of October 27, as a result of a Russian attack on Kyiv, the Pivdennyi Bridge across the Dnipro River and the ground infrastructure of the metro were damaged. This was reported by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the Kyiv City Military Administration, and the Kyiv City State Administration. According to their data, the green and red metro lines are operating partially, and two stations are temporarily closed to passengers. Specialists have already arrived at the scene, and the KCMA promised to provide additional information regarding the restoration of the regular schedule.
What happened on the night of October 27
According to city authorities, Russia attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles twice that night. On the evening of October 26, missiles hit a university building, dormitories, and residential buildings in the Desnianskyi district: one person was killed and at least ten others were injured. During the second attack in the Podilskyi district, a missile struck an administrative building. It was during these strikes, according to the KCMA, that the infrastructure of the Pivdennyi Bridge and surface metro facilities was damaged.
Metro status
Following the attack, train traffic is restricted: carriages run between Akademmistechko and Darnytsia stations. Chernihivska and Lisova stations are temporarily closed to passengers. Thus, both the green and red lines are not operating at full capacity, and passengers must take these restrictions into account when planning their routes. The Kyiv City State Administration clarified that the resumption of the regular metro schedule will be announced additionally once work on the damaged sections is completed.
Traffic on Pivdennyi Bridge
Vehicle traffic on the Pivdennyi Bridge is also restricted. Specialists are working at the site to assess the condition of the structures and eliminate the consequences of the strike. Full restoration of traffic on the bridge, according to the authorities, is possible only after the completion of inspections and restoration work, the timeframe of which has not yet been announced.
The bridge is damaged not for the first time
The Pivdennyi Bridge is becoming a target of strikes not for the first time. Following the attack on October 22, its metro infrastructure was also damaged: the green line operated in two separate sections for several hours, and vehicle traffic from the right bank to the left was restricted. The context of repeated strikes on bridges across the Dnipro in Kyiv has been observed since the beginning of October, when after a series of drone attacks, traffic on the Pivdennyi Bridge was completely blocked for a time, and restrictions on lanes and directions were introduced on other crossings. Thus, the damage to the bridge on the night of October 27 is not the first this month.
Reaction of Kyiv authorities
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the Kyiv City Military Administration, and the KCMA confirmed the fact of damage to the Pivdennyi Bridge and surface metro infrastructure and urged residents to take transport restrictions into account. Specialized experts are working at the scene, and information on the restoration of the regular schedule for the metro and road transport will be published additionally. There was no official data on new casualties resulting from the night attack at the time of the authorities' statement.
