On the night of July 16, the capital of Ukraine was hit by ballistic missiles. Explosions were heard around 1:00 AM and lasted for more than half an hour. Air raid sirens sounded one minute before the attack began, but the consequences could not be prevented.

According to local authorities, the strikes hit the Darnytskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts of Kyiv. Fires were recorded in non-residential and warehouse premises in both districts. Rescue services promptly arrived at the scenes and began extinguishing the fires.

Darnytskyi District: two dead, including a child

In the Darnytskyi district, a fire engulfed an administrative and warehouse building, parked trucks nearby, and another warehouse. The fire was extinguished, but by morning, it was reported that two people had died and two were injured — among the victims was a child. This information has been confirmed by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES).

Sviatoshynskyi District: three injured

In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a single-story warehouse building caught fire as a result of a direct hit. The fire was contained, but three people sustained injuries. All victims were taken to medical facilities.

Discrepancies in data: SES vs. City Hall

As of the morning of July 16, the SES reported two deaths and six injuries in Kyiv. However, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, stated in his social media that five people were injured, with the same number of fatalities — two. The discrepancy in figures may be due to the fact that information is being updated in real time, and different agencies are operating with data collected at different stages.

“Rescuers continue to eliminate the consequences of Russian aggression. Information about casualties and injured persons is being updated,” the SES press service stated at 6:45 AM.

Context: series of attacks on Ukraine

This strike was part of an ongoing series of attacks on Ukraine. The previous day, July 15, Russia launched two ballistic missiles and 122 attack drones. Air defense forces managed to shoot down most of the drones. Even earlier, on July 14, Kyiv was also subjected to a nighttime ballistic missile attack — then the Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi districts were affected.

The situation remains tense. Rescue services continue their work at the scenes of the incidents, while authorities urge citizens to follow safety precautions and monitor official sources of information.
