Global oil markets are reacting to geopolitical de-escalation in the Persian Gulf. The price of black gold is showing a steady downward trend, fueled by trader optimism regarding the imminent resumption of shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Price Dynamics: Decline Following Rally
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil dropped to around $75 per barrel during trading. This decline followed a correction after a sharp 11% price surge recorded in the first three days of the current week. A similar pattern is observed with North Sea Brent crude, which closed Wednesday's trading session above the $79 per barrel mark.
The main driver of the decline is market confidence that tensions surrounding this key artery of global fuel trade can be mitigated through diplomatic channels.
Diplomatic Breakthrough: Iran and Oman
At the center of attention is a potential agreement between Iran and Oman. On Wednesday, representatives from Tehran confirmed that a joint statement between the two countries is under review. According to Iranian diplomats, the deal will be concluded unless third parties obstruct the process.
An official from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs publicly stated on August 5 that an understanding had been reached between Tehran and Muscat regarding the geographic coordinates of the shipping route through the strait. According to Axios sources, the US plans to announce the deal opening the strait on Wednesday (Washington time), which will be early morning on August 6 in Kyiv.
The document stipulates the establishment of specific rules for ship passage and, according to rumors, satisfies several of Iran's demands. US President Donald Trump also confirmed on Wednesday that an agreement is imminent.
Trader Caution
Despite positive signals, an element of uncertainty remains in the markets. Traders are hesitant to fully close long positions, fearing they might be caught off guard by a sudden escalation of the conflict. The market views news of the deal as reassuring but continues to keep a close watch, awaiting official confirmations and the implementation of the agreements.
