Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has stated Warsaw's intention to seek the deployment of United States and French nuclear weapons on its territory. The head of the defense department announced this in an interview with WNP, emphasizing that strengthening military partnership with key allies is reaching a new level within the collective security system.
Strategy of Participation in the Nuclear Sharing Program
During the interview, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that strengthening military cooperation with the US implies not only maintaining and increasing the permanent American contingent in the country. Warsaw intends to actively seek integration into the US Nuclear Sharing program, which allows NATO member states to utilize strategic deterrence capabilities. According to the minister, such steps strengthen NATO's eastern flank and create a reliable barrier against potential threats in the region.
Development of European Partnership with Paris
In parallel with the American vector, Poland intends to deepen contacts with France, which offers European partners its own model of participation in the nuclear deterrence system. As the Polish Defense Minister emphasized, work in both areas does not contradict but complements each other. Participation in Washington's initiatives does not preclude building deep European agreements with Paris, opening additional opportunities for Warsaw to strengthen its defense capabilities.
Consultations with Allies and Implementation Timelines
Warsaw plans to gradually increase its commitments in the field of nuclear deterrence, although specific timeframes for making final decisions have not yet been determined. The defense minister emphasized that any practical steps require detailed consultations with all NATO partners. Earlier in July, Poland and France already held their first official meeting dedicated to bilateral nuclear cooperation issues.
Significance of the Initiative for Regional Security
Poland's aspiration to join nuclear deterrence programs marks a major shift in the country's defense strategy amid the ongoing transformation of the European security architecture. The implementation of these plans could fundamentally alter the balance of power on NATO's eastern flank and strengthen Warsaw's position as a key military player in Europe. Further developments will depend on the results of closed consultations with Washington and Paris, as well as the general position of the North Atlantic Alliance leadership.
