Private air defense units continue to form in Ukraine, already carrying out combat missions and shooting down enemy drones, including jet-powered "Shaheds." This was stated in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by a representative of the drone manufacturing company "Wild Hornets." According to him, the "Night Hornets" unit has already accounted for more than 60 downed targets, which, according to the company's own assessment, makes it currently the most effective private air defense formation in the country.

Results and Real Scale

The company emphasized that publicly, only a few successful examples of private air defense creation are known—mostly large state and private corporations with the financial capacity to invest in this area. The units are indeed shooting down hostile targets, but as "Wild Hornets" note, this is not yet a mass phenomenon measured by hundreds of cases per month. Currently, isolated examples of successful initiatives yielding real results are being recorded, although globally they do not affect the overall air defense picture.

Serial Production of Interceptors

The manufacturer expressed confidence that entering serial production of jet drone interceptors will significantly increase the efficiency of private air defense formations. In the future, according to company representatives, the system's real effectiveness will be established, and their own air defense network can be scaled within available resources.

Confirmation from the Ministry of Defense

The context of these statements is linked to the fact that earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported for the first time on the successful results of private air defense units starting to perform combat tasks. Thus, information about the combat activities of private formations received official confirmation at the department level, rather than just from the operators themselves.

First Downed Jet "Shahed"

It is separately noted that private air defense shot down a jet-powered "Shahed" flying at a speed of over 400 km/h for the first time. According to available data, the incident occurred in the skies over the Kharkiv region. This case became one of the first publicly recorded examples of intercepting a high-speed jet target by private formations, demonstrating that private units are capable of operating not only against slow multicopters, but also against more complex targets.

Prospects and Limitations

The combination of these data indicates that private air defense in Ukraine is moving from the stage of experimental initiatives into the phase of practical application, yet its contribution to the overall defense system remains targeted. According to the manufacturers, the key condition for growing this contribution will be the serial production of interceptors and the expansion of the network within the financial capabilities of private investors.
