The situation on the front lines in August 2026 remains tense, and data from Ukrainian intelligence leaves no illusions about the imminent end of hostilities. In an interview with RBK-Ukraine, Vadym Skibitsky, Lieutenant General and Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, voiced alarming conclusions from analysts. According to him, there are no signs on the battlefield indicating Russia's readiness to cease fire and begin normal negotiations.

Kremlin's Strategic Goals: Seizing the Donetsk Region

The GUR's analytical center has concluded that the plans of the Russian leadership for the current stage of the conflict are exclusively offensive. Vadym Skibitsky stated that Vladimir Putin is striving to achieve previously set goals and does not intend to stop. The key priority for the Russian military machine in 2026 remains the completion of the occupation of the territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In particular, the Lieutenant General emphasized that the plans of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia include completing the seizure of the Donetsk region by the end of the current year.

Rejection of Peace Initiatives Until 2027

An important aspect of the situation assessment is Moscow's refusal of diplomatic concessions in the short term. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia does not plan to reach any agreements or sign a peace treaty until the end of 2026. This is confirmed by the absence of signals regarding readiness for de-escalation from Russian military commanders. The Kremlin continues to insist on its conditions, which, according to Kyiv, are unacceptable for Ukraine.

Changes in Russia's Border Zones

Parallel to the intensification on the front, changes are taking place in the administrative regime of Russia's border territories. It is reported that the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia plans to cancel border zones on certain sections of the Rostov and Voronezh regions bordering the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Experts link this decision to the need to simplify logistics and the transfer of resources for the continuation of hostilities, as well as an attempt to stabilize the situation in the rear.

Contradictory Data

While Ukraine's GUR confidently states that Russia is not ready for negotiations, alternative points of view exist in Western analytical circles. Some experts believe that the protracted nature of the conflict may force the Russian leadership to make tactical concessions by the end of the year, especially in the event of increased sanctions pressure or internal economic problems. However, according to data from Vadym Skibitsky, there are currently no such prerequisites, and Russia continues to act within the framework of a rigid military strategy.

Threats to Ukraine in Autumn and Winter 2026

The second part of the interview with Vadym Skibitsky, published by RBK-Ukraine, is devoted to details of possible attacks on infrastructure facilities and populated areas of Ukraine in the autumn-winter period. Intelligence warns of the risks of new offensive operations, including from the northern direction. It is also noted that attacks on Kyiv and its suburbs are systematic, which, according to the GUR, is part of a strategy to exhaust Ukrainian defense and undermine the morale of the population.
