Washington seeks a path to de-escalation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Washington's readiness for active participation in resolving the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. According to him, the American side is ready to intervene in the course of hostilities as soon as a real opportunity to reach a peace agreement arises.
This statement was made immediately after talks with the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, which took place on July 23 in Manila. Rubio emphasized that for success, a formula is needed that both sides of the conflict — both Kyiv and Moscow — will agree to.
Admission of failures and new conditions
The American diplomat did not hide that previous attempts by Donald Trump's team to stop the war were unsuccessful. However, according to Rubio, the administration is not giving up the idea of a peaceful settlement. Washington is ready to resume active work if the geopolitical situation or conditions on the battlefield change in the direction of the possibility of negotiations.
“If circumstances have changed so that this has become possible, we are ready to act. The President is committed to this cause, and every day, if we see an opportunity to improve the situation, we will do it,” the head of the State Department promised.
Trump's assessment of the situation
Rubio also voiced the personal position of US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict. The head of the White House considers the war “foolish” and “meaningless.” It is this mindset, according to Rubio, that determines the US readiness to play any positive role in stopping hostilities as soon as there is a chance.
