South Korea is facing an unprecedented heatwave that has led to the establishment of an absolute temperature record in the country's history. According to official data from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), in the city of Yangsan on the southeast coast of the peninsula, at 13:26 local time, thermometers showed 42.5°C. This value became the highest ever recorded by meteorologists within the state's territory.

Historic Maximum and State of Emergency

The situation in the region is critical: in Yangsan, the temperature has exceeded the 40°C mark for five consecutive days. In other major cities, including Daegu and Busan, readings above 30°C have also been recorded. In response to the prolonged heat, authorities have declared a state of emergency related to high temperatures in more than 20 populated areas across the country.

This level of danger was introduced this year specifically to respond to extreme weather conditions. According to the regulations, the alarm signal is activated when the expected heat index reaches 38°C, or when the actual temperature rises to 39°C and above.

The meteorological agency strongly recommended that citizens immediately cease all outdoor activities. Experts warned that even enclosed spaces without air conditioning could pose a serious threat to health. An official statement from the KMA urges people to immediately move to heat shelters, shaded areas, or buildings with climate control, as well as to monitor their hydration levels.

Under the scorching sun, many residents prefer to spend time in shopping malls, cafes, and other cool public places. The heat has also struck the sports calendar. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) was forced to cancel a game in Changwon after the temperature reached 39.5°C. This is already the second consecutive match cancellation in this city due to extreme conditions; the decision was made for the safety of fans and athletes.

Statistics show an alarming trend: the average number of hot days in South Korea (when the temperature is above 33°C) has increased from 8 days in the 1970s to 19 days in the last five years. Scientists link the frequency and intensity of such heatwaves to anthropogenic climate change, as well as the return of the El Niño phenomenon, which contributes to rising temperatures worldwide.
