For many drivers, the "Stop" sign has become a familiar element of the landscape, seemingly requiring only a light tap on the brake pedal. However, the habit of not stopping completely but merely slowing down can lead to unpleasant consequences in the form of an administrative fine. Experts remind us: the requirement of sign 2.2 "No passing without stopping" is categorical — the vehicle must come to a complete stop.
Complete Stop — A Mandatory Requirement
According to the Traffic Rules of Ukraine, priority sign 2.2 prohibits passing without a complete stop. This means that a maneuver to reduce speed before the sign is not considered compliance with the requirement. The vehicle must completely cease movement.
Only after a complete stop is the driver obliged to yield to vehicles moving on the intersecting road. If sign plate 7.8 "Direction of the main road" is installed before the sign, it indicates the trajectory of the main road. In this case, after stopping, it is necessary to yield not only to cars on the main road but also to vehicles approaching from the right on an equal road.
Where Exactly Should You Stop?
The stopping point depends on the road markings. If a stop line (marking 1.12) is painted before the sign, the vehicle must stop strictly before it. In the absence of markings, the stop must be made directly in front of the STOP sign. Movement can only continue after the driver is sure of the safety of the maneuver.
Special rules apply before uncontrolled railway crossings. If a STOP sign is installed before the crossing, the driver must stop before the stop line, or in its absence — before the sign itself.
Fine for Violation
The STOP sign is installed in places where, before starting to move, the driver must fully assess the road situation. This is why very slow passing without a complete stop is considered non-compliance with the sign's requirements. If a driver passes sign 2.2 without a complete stop, this is classified as a violation of the Traffic Rules.
According to Part 1 of Article 122 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses, a fine of 340 hryvnias is provided for such a violation.
