On the night of July 17, the city of Sumy became the target of a repeated attack by Russian forces. The enemy used guided aerial bombs (KAB), striking civilian infrastructure in several districts of the settlement. Information about the incident has been confirmed by the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Grygorov.
Scale of the night strike
Preliminary data indicates five bomb impacts were recorded during the night operation. Notably, this strike occurred less than six hours after the previous shelling of the city outskirts. Thus, Sumy came under intense pressure over a short period.
Experts are particularly drawn to the geography of the impacts. Two of the five strikes hit the central part of the city directly. This significantly increases risks for the civilian population and complicates the work of rescue services due to high building density.
Impact on infrastructure
In one of the explosion epicenters, a non-residential multi-story building was damaged. Extensive destruction was recorded around the impact sites: hundreds of window panes were shattered in neighboring buildings. Site inspections are ongoing, with all necessary emergency services working at the locations.
Oleksandr Grygorov emphasized that information on casualties and the exact scale of material damage is still being verified. The full picture of the consequences will become clear after search and recovery operations are completed.
Series of attacks over recent days
The night strike on July 17 was part of a series of aggressive actions against Sumy that have continued for several days. The previous morning, on July 16, the city was also shelled with KABs, resulting in more than 20 people injured. That same evening, the enemy made another attempt to strike the city.
The situation in the region remains tense. On July 11, Sumy was also targeted by a large-scale aerial bomb attack, which led to tragic consequences: five people died and more than 30 were injured. Repeated strikes indicate a systematic threat to this region.
