Taras Shevchenko National University Shifts to Remote Learning Amid Security Threats

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv has announced a temporary transition to a remote format for both work and studies. The new regulations take effect on September 29 and will remain in place until at least October 16, 2026. These precautionary measures were introduced by the university leadership due to a significant deterioration in the security situation in the Ukrainian capital.

Organization of the Educational Process and Work

All lectures and seminars will be conducted exclusively online in strict compliance with current schedules. Laboratory, practical, and test assignments will either be postponed or adapted for remote delivery depending on the current operational situation. Students will be informed about any urgent updates through the official channels of faculties, academic departments, and group curators.

The administrative and teaching staff has also been shifted to remote operations. Communication with students and colleagues is maintained via email, dedicated educational platforms, and other digital channels. Meanwhile, critical university infrastructure continues to operate under special security protocols.

University Safety and Infrastructure

Despite the general shift online, some personnel will continue working on-site. This applies to staff responsible for the university's vital operations, duty and emergency response teams, and security personnel. Round-the-clock access to shelters has been secured across all educational buildings and student dormitories of the university.

The university administration has committed to maintaining stable communication with all participants in the educational process and ensuring the secure storage of essential data and documents. The validity period of these restrictive measures may be reviewed and extended by a separate decree depending on further developments in the region.

Context and Previous Attacks

The decision to switch to remote learning comes against the backdrop of recent massive shelling in Kyiv. To recap, on September 16, an enemy attack severely damaged the sports complex of Taras Shevchenko National University, blowing out windows and damaging the facade and interior spaces, though no casualties were reported. Additionally, on September 28, buildings belonging to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science were targeted, resulting in civilian casualties.
