The Third Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has published the first public photographs of the Rapid Ranger surface-to-air missile system mounted on the URO VAMTAC tactical off-road vehicle. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the corps' official Facebook page. The images document the first public appearance of the mobile air defense system, making them a significant event for understanding the evolution of Ukraine's air defense.
First public appearance and the carrier platform
In the published footage, the system is being loaded with LMM Martlet lightweight multirole missiles. The Rapid Ranger air defense system is mounted on the chassis of the Spanish URO VAMTAC tactical off-road vehicle, which is in the service of the 1030th "Aquila" air defense and artillery missile regiment. It is precisely this variant of the installation that demonstrates the emphasis on mobility: the Spanish off-road vehicles can reach speeds of up to 135 km/h, are capable of traveling on public roads, quickly changing position, and moving over long distances.
Modular design and system characteristics
The Rapid Ranger surface-to-air missile system itself weighs only 500 kg and is built on a modular scheme. This allows it to be installed not only on the URO VAMTAC but also on most wheeled vehicles — pickups, specialized armored vehicles — as well as on tracked equipment. The system is equipped with an optoelectronic surveillance system providing a 360-degree field of view, which expands the target detection sector without the need to rotate the entire carrier platform.
LMM Martlet missiles and laser guidance
The LMM Martlet missiles used have a length of 1.3 meters and a mass of 13 kilograms. They can accelerate to 1,800 km/h and engage targets at a range of up to 7 kilometers. A key distinction is the presence of laser guidance, not just infrared. Thanks to this, the system is effective against targets with a low thermal signature, those equipped with thermal decoys, as well as against Russian reconnaissance drones with a small thermal footprint.
Strategic context: indigenous air defense systems
The unveiling of the system coincides with the public statement by President Volodymyr Zelensky that Ukraine is moving toward the development of its own air defense systems of all standards — from gun systems to missiles. Particular attention, he said, is being paid to countering ballistic targets. Meanwhile, it was also reported that a "Shahed" drone was shot down for the first time over the Kharkiv region by a private air defense system, indicating the expansion of the air defense shield through non-state means.
