Kyiv and London have defined new vectors for strategic interaction. The first working conversation between the Acting Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Yevhen Yarmak, and the new British Secretary of State for Defence, Wes Streeting, took place in a format that set specific tasks for the near future. The main theme of the dialogue was not just the continuation of aid, but a transition to deeper integration of defense systems.
A Breakthrough in Airspace
The central item on the agenda was the strengthening of the Ukrainian Air Force. Kyiv directly voiced to London its need to implement the project for the supply of Saab Gripen fighters. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense emphasizes that these aircraft, in conjunction with Meteor missiles, will become a key factor in the fight against Russian combat aviation. It is expected that the appearance of such equipment will significantly raise the bar for the protection of the Ukrainian sky.
Parallel to this, support for the existing fleet of F-16 fighters was discussed. Ukraine insists on the continuation of ammunition supplies for these machines. The ministry notes that this is critically important not only for tactical tasks but also for the protection of strategic objects, in particular the "grain corridor," which is regularly subjected to attacks.
Fighting "Shaheds" and New Financing Mechanisms
A separate block of negotiations was dedicated to countering mass drone attacks. The Russian side is increasing the pace of using Shahed cruise missiles, which creates a threat to critical infrastructure and the civilian population. The sides discussed the need for partners to quickly provide air defense systems capable of effectively intercepting these targets.
An interesting aspect was the discussion of the procurement financial model. The sides touched upon the possibility of purchasing Ukrainian drones for British defense forces. The discussion concerned the implementation of a deal through the ERA Loan mechanism, the funds for which are formed from the income of frozen Russian assets. The list of systems of interest to London included interceptor drones, as well as middle strike and deep strike class unmanned aerial vehicles.
From Words to Deeds
During the conversation, Yevhen Yarmak thanked London for its unwavering support and congratulated Wes Streeting on his appointment. The Ukrainian side positions this cooperation as long-term and mutually beneficial, offering to exchange experience in modern warfare and solutions that have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield.
This dialogue takes place against the backdrop of the expansion of financial tools to support Kyiv. On July 22, the EU Council approved the United Kingdom's participation in the Ukraine Support Loan program. This decision allows London to join the €90 billion loan, the funds of which will be directed to defense needs and budgetary support for Ukraine in 2026–2027. Moreover, this opens up additional opportunities for Kyiv to purchase defense products directly from British manufacturers.
