Ukrainian military forces have received a fundamentally new solution for the survival of armored vehicles on the battlefield. After two years of intensive work, engineers have created an autonomous protection system capable of repelling attacks by enemy combat drones. This was announced by Brigadier General Andriy Lebedenko, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during a briefing.
The problem that armor cannot solve
The situation regarding the restoration and use of armored vehicles in the combat zone has become critical. General Lebedenko noted that the catastrophic prevalence of drones — both Ukrainian and Russian — has changed the rules of the game. Traditional protection methods have ceased to work: it is impossible to simply increase armor thickness to withstand pinpoint strikes from above. Old weapons and tactics no longer allow for effective action in modern conditions.
Technological breakthrough: smart protection
Engineers have managed to find a way out of the deadlock. Over the past two years, a smart, fully autonomous protection system has been developed. According to a representative of the command, working prototypes already exist that allow protecting equipment from any combat drones. The system is universal and can be installed on armored personnel carriers, tanks, and other types of military equipment.
Impact on tactics and maneuverability
The appearance of such a system will be a turning point. According to General Lebedenko's assessment, the implementation of autonomous protection will significantly enhance the maneuverability of Ukrainian troops. Equipment will be able to move and operate with less risk, which is critically important for conducting operations under conditions of total fire threat.
Industrial adaptation and new procurements
The development of new protection systems is taking place against the backdrop of a difficult production situation. Due to the threat of Russian shelling, Ukrainian arms manufacturers are forced to constantly adapt: diversify capacities across the country, hide production underground, and even move parts of assembly lines abroad.
Parallel to the development of high-tech protection means, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has announced new procurements. The "State Logistics Operator" is acquiring body armor with positive buoyancy elements for the first time. This innovation will allow defenders to be saved on water even with full combat gear and weapons.
