In the context of modern warfare, where logistics and economics play a role no less significant than tactics, the emergence of affordable and effective weaponry can become a decisive factor. This is exactly what the Flamingo cruise missile from Ukrainian defense company Fire Point has become. According to the company's General Director, Irina Terekh, the domestic development is not only successfully used in combat conditions but also offers a unique economic advantage over Western counterparts.
Economic efficiency: Flamingo vs. Tomahawk
One of the main arguments in favor of the Ukrainian missile is its cost. While the production of the American Tomahawk cruise missile, manufactured by Raytheon, costs the customer approximately $3.5 million, the Flamingo costs significantly less — slightly under $600,000. This makes the Ukrainian product almost six times cheaper than its overseas competitor.
Such a price difference allows for the scaling of weapon application, making it more accessible for regular operations. While the use of expensive Western systems requires careful calculation and is often limited by quotas, the domestic missile allows for strikes with high frequency, inflicting significant damage on the enemy.
Technical specifications and combat use
Low cost does not imply a compromise in effectiveness. The Flamingo missile is capable of carrying a warhead weighing over a ton, making it a powerful tool for striking important targets. Cases of successful use of this weapon against military facilities on Russian territory have already been recorded.
The range of flight is particularly impressive. According to Irina Terekh, one of the missile's missions involved a flight of about 1,800 kilometers along a complex route. This became one of the longest flights for a cruise missile of this class, demonstrating the high reliability of guidance and autonomy systems.
Production scale and personnel potential
Fire Point is demonstrating impressive rates of capacity expansion. Currently, the monthly production of Flamingo missiles amounts to about 100 units. This allows for maintaining a constant flow of ammunition to the front lines without waiting for supplies from abroad.
The company's production network covers 83 sites in Ukraine and one more in Denmark. The staff consists of about 6,000 people, which indicates the company's significant contribution to the country's economy and defense industry. In addition to missiles, the enterprise produces hundreds of long-range FP-1 and FP-2 drones daily, which are also actively used for strikes against strategic targets, in particular, oil refineries.
New horizons: ballistics and air defense
The development of Ukraine's defense sector is not limited to cruise missiles only. Fire Point is actively working on creating its own ballistic missile, which will expand the arsenal of strike capabilities. Furthermore, the company is involved in the development of the European Freyja air defense system.
The Freyja project is positioned as a cheaper alternative to American Patriot complexes. According to the latest data, Ukraine expects to complete the creation of this missile defense system in the first half of 2027. This will be an important step towards ensuring its own security and independence from the import of expensive protection systems.
