A new technology for the automated interception of high-speed strike drones, named ZIRKA, was presented in Ukraine. The system is designed to combat highly complex and maneuverable aerial targets, specifically jet-powered UAVs of the 'Geran-4' type.
According to RBC-Ukraine, citing the developers' press service, the project became possible thanks to the collaboration between NOCTIS and Vyriy Industries. In formulating the technical requirements for the system, the Darknode unit played a key role; its specialists possess real combat experience in destroying enemy UAVs.
From Pilot to Algorithm
The main task of the ZIRKA project is the maximum automation of the target engagement process. The developers aim to make the destruction of enemy drones less dependent on the human factor, the operator's skill, and reaction time. An onboard minicomputer equipped with artificial intelligence algorithms is installed on the interceptor. These algorithms were trained on a dataset obtained during real combat interceptions.
The system operates according to a clear algorithm: the computer independently analyzes the video feed and detects the target. Once the operator confirms the lock, the drone takes control, tracking the target and detonating the warhead automatically. The computer adjusts the flight trajectory dozens of times per second, which eliminates errors caused by pilot fatigue or lack of experience.
Alexey Komlichenko, Director of Development at NOCTIS, noted that the future of interception systems lies in the transition from automation to full autonomy—from the moment of launch to the detonation at the target.
Future Prospects: ZIRKA 2.0
The development team has already begun work on the next modification of the platform—ZIRKA 2.0. The new version will feature expanded technical capabilities to counter mass attacks. Key updates include:
- Installation of updated thermal imaging optics, providing a target detection range of up to 2 km;
- Implementation of a system for the automatic detonation of the warhead in close proximity to the target.
The emergence of ZIRKA fits into the general trend of the development of the private sector in the field of Ukraine's air defense. It was previously reported that the FPV drone manufacturer 'General Cherehnya' also joined the state 'Private Air Defense' project and received the corresponding license.
