Russian military industry continues to evolve in the development of strike unmanned aerial vehicles. The latest step in this race is the emergence of the upgraded version of the jet drone "Geran-4 Siker". Analysis of debris and OSINT researchers' data has revealed critical changes in the drone's design aimed at increasing its survivability and target accuracy.
New Optics and Terminal Guidance System
The main difference of the new modification is the redesigned nose section. It houses a compact electro-optical module which, according to analysts, is responsible for terminal guidance. This system allows the drone to maintain autonomy even if communication with the operator is lost at a critical moment of the attack — during the dive onto the target.
In addition to the main module, an additional fixed camera was found on the drone's body. Experts identified it as the Chinese Dahua TiOC Dual-Lens Panoramic model with a 180-degree field of view. Presumably, this system is used for wide-area terrain observation and situational awareness. There is also a theory that the camera helps detect Ukrainian interceptor drones approaching the target.
Technical Specifications and Engines
The "Geran-4 Siker" demonstrates impressive tactical and technical characteristics. The stated flight range is up to 550 kilometers, and the cruising speed reaches 300 km/h. The warhead weighs 50 kilograms. The new airframe allows the drone to actively maneuver at speeds of 300–400 km/h, while the maximum speed can reach 500 km/h. The practical flight ceiling is limited to 5000 meters.
The design uses two types of Chinese turbojet engines:
- Telefly LX-WP-160 with a thrust of about 160 kgf;
- Telefly TF-TJ2000A with a thrust of about 200 kgf (this same engine is used on the "Geran-5").
Challenges for Air Defense and Countermeasures
The high speed of jet modifications of the "Geran" creates serious difficulties for Ukrainian air defense systems. Mobile fire groups and some interceptor drones currently cannot effectively counter such targets due to the insufficient speed of their own aircraft.
In response to this threat, the Ukrainian side is developing new technologies. In particular, the automated interception system ZIRKA has been presented, created specifically to combat high-speed jet drones like the "Geran-4".
Dangerous Munitions and Safety Measures
In addition to drone upgrades, Russian occupiers are employing other dangerous methods. There are reports of the use of depleted uranium munitions mounted on strike drones of the "Geran-2" type. Such elements were discovered during shelling in the Chernihiv region.
In light of this, civilians are strongly advised not to approach the debris of kamikaze drones. Upon discovering such objects, it is necessary to immediately call the police, the State Emergency Service (SES), and bomb disposal experts.
