The team of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the EU to cut the issuance of tourist visas to Russians to an 'absolute minimum.' The call came against the backdrop of accusations over the Leipzig attack and an investigation into the involvement of a Belarusian/Russian citizen.

The EU will discuss a new package of restrictions in the coming weeks: tightening the visa regime for Russians, restricting the movement of Russian diplomats, and expanding sanctions against the shadow fleet. The trigger was the drone incident in Leipzig and the sabotage in Poland.
