Apple has begun closed-loop testing of a giant foldable tablet featuring a desplegable display ranging from 18 to 20 inches. The device design draws inspiration from Huawei's solutions and could hit the market as early as 2028 at a price significantly exceeding modern iPad Pro models.
Development Background and iPhone Duo Experience
The decision to accelerate work on the new form factor followed the commercially successful launch of the iPhone Duo foldable smartphone. This model demonstrated high consumer demand, pushing engineers to create a larger device. Industry analysts estimate the novelty will structurally resemble two iPad mini tablets joined by a central hinge.
Technical Features and Partnership with Corning
To implement this ambitious project, Cupertino intends to use special ultra-thin glass, with Corning serving as the exclusive supplier of the protective coating. GIS will handle finishing and comprehensive quality inspection. Engineers are also considering introducing a nanotexture coating to protect the crease area from premature wear, an issue previously encountered on the iPhone Duo.
Software Adaptation and HarmonyOS Approach
A standard version of the iPadOS operating system will prove insufficient for interacting with an 18-inch screen. Developers will need to deeply redesign the interface, bringing its capabilities closer to desktop platforms. A similar approach was previously implemented by Huawei, which tailored its HarmonyOS interface for large foldable screens.
Limited Edition and High Device Cost
Analysts project the novelty will occupy an ultra-premium segment and is not intended for mass shipments, with only 1 million units expected in 2028. Given that a competing foldable device from Huawei started at around $3,740, Apple's flexible tablet will likely prove even more expensive.
