Restoration work has commenced in central Kyiv at the National Center "Ukrainian House", which suffered damage as a result of a massive Russian attack on the night of May 24, 2026. The blast wave compromised the integrity of the facade and the glass dome of the building located on European Square, causing moisture to enter and the facility to lose heat.

Scale of Damage and Technical Complexities

In total, 43 double-glazed windows with a combined area of 129 square meters were damaged during the May strike. Ukrainian House Director Olha Vieru reported that the foyer with its large facade windows took the heaviest blow, though the exhibition exhibits themselves remained intact. The situation was complicated by the fact that the height of certain window structures on the dome reaches seven meters, requiring a specialized and costly approach to repair work.

Funding and Progress of Repairs

To conduct emergency restoration, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund allocated approximately 1.55 million hryvnias under a support mechanism for damaged cultural sites. Builders began work on October 19, and the first stage has already been successfully completed. The next key task will be the full restoration of the glass dome over the atrium, while the exact completion date for the entire complex of repair measures has not yet been announced.

Significance of the Object and Context of Past Destruction

The Ukrainian House is a well-known capital venue for art exhibitions, educational initiatives, and public discussions, as well as a recognized local architectural monument and an example of Kyiv modernism. The building had previously suffered destruction in October 2022, when a blast wave also damaged its glass dome. The current repairs are of critical importance for preserving the architectural monument and maintaining its functioning ahead of the cold season.
