Amidst the ongoing war and regular air raid alerts, the Kyiv Metro remains one of the main shelters for the city's residents. However, the growing influx of people is creating serious issues regarding comfort and safety. In an attempt to systematize the sheltering process, a pilot project for platform zoning using special navigational stickers was launched at the Syrets metro station.
New navigation: zones for different categories of passengers
According to information provided by the Kyiv Metro, special markings have appeared at the Syrets station designed to help passengers navigate where it is best to stay. The division of space into zones follows a clear logic: there are separate areas for people with children, passengers with pets, as well as zones for those who prefer to sit and zones for those who stand.
Metro representatives explain that such a measure is necessary to optimize space usage. Zoning should help passengers settle more comfortably, avoiding conflicts over free space, and also simplify the task for the duty staff. In the event of an emergency or the need to provide first aid, employees will be able to quickly identify where the most vulnerable categories of citizens are located.
Recommendatory nature and the tent problem
It is important to note that the introduced division is purely recommendatory. Metro employees will not forcibly move people between zones, and the effectiveness of the system depends directly on the passengers' awareness. Authorities hope that citizens will take into account the needs of others nearby and adhere to the proposed markings.
Simultaneously with the introduction of navigation, the Kyiv Metro has appealed to passengers not to bring bulky items to the stations. Specifically, this refers to tents and air mattresses. Due to the sharp increase in the number of people using the metro as a shelter, free space is becoming critically important for ensuring the safety and accessibility of all passengers. Urbanists and experts have previously noted that the "seizure" of spots by tents creates the main problem for the underground as a shelter.
Scaling the project and shelter statistics
At the moment, similar zoning solutions are being developed for other Kyiv metro stations. Further information will be provided regarding the results of the pilot project at Syrets station and its possible expansion across the entire network. This will be an important indicator of how effective such a system for managing human flows is under conditions of space shortage.
The relevance of the issue is confirmed by statistics. During the massive attack on Kyiv at the end of July 2026, more than 56,000 people took shelter in the underground. This is a record number that highlights the critical role of the metro in the capital's civil defense system.
