Russia has completed the construction of a large new military facility for launching jet-powered drones in the Rostov region in just a month and a half. The large-scale site, with an area comparable to 126 football fields, began construction at the beginning of September based on commercial satellite imagery.
Construction timeline and parameters
According to Reuters, as of August 31, the future site was completely empty land. Active construction work commenced on September 1, and by mid-October, a fully formed military complex had emerged. The total area of the facility covers approximately 0.9 square kilometers, demonstrating unprecedented infrastructure construction rates.
Location and potential of the new facility
The new complex is located about 3.5 kilometers from the operational Russian Millerovo air base, which hosts the 31st Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. Experts from the private intelligence firm DroneSec note that the location's placement ensures it remains covered by existing air defense systems.
Purpose of the base and jet drones
DroneSec CEO Mike Monnick stated that the facility is designed to operate Russia's newest jet-powered drone models, Geran-4 and Geran-5. Eight launch rail platforms have already been installed on the western edge of the complex, allowing for mass launches of 100 or more drones within a 24-hour period.
Strategic significance of the complex
The appearance of such a large facility expands the existing network of stationary bases and highlights the capability to rapidly deploy offensive capabilities. Analysts estimate that the facility is nearing completion and will likely begin full-scale operations in the coming weeks.
